Due to a debt, industrialist Augusto Medeiros is forced to marry off his only daughter, the sweet Rosália, to the fearsome Francisco de Montserrat, an authoritarian banker. Augusto's decision strains his marriage to Leonor, who disagrees with her husband. However, Rosália has fallen in love with Adriano—a newly graduated doctor she met at a New Year's Eve masquerade ball in 1901—unaware that he is Mr. de Montserrat's son. Meanwhile, Montserrat keeps a woman named Joana in his care; deemed insane, she is held captive in a room within his mansion. Joana knows too much about the banker's dark past.
