Based on the 1867 novel of the same name by Portuguese writer Júlio Dinis, it was adapted by Lauro César Muniz, with scripts by Bosco Brasil, Ismael Fernandes, Analy A. Set in a 19th-century Portuguese village, the story follows the orphaned sisters Guida and Clara, who are raised by the respected Padre Antônio, known as the Senhor Reitor.
