Wine grower Peter Vierköttel and his friend, the gardener Jupp Spriestersbach, often and happily refer to the wine made from Vierköttel's vineyards, which Vierköttel's wife Anna does not like to see, because she is responsible for the finances of the household. Anna keeps her husband just as short about money as Jupp's sister-in-law Camilla keeps her brother-in-law. Anna is also worried that her husband is setting a bad example for their son Bartel. She would therefore very much appreciate it if her son were to marry Bees, Jupp's daughter. But she has already fallen in love with the young gardener Reinhold Bock.
