The story takes place in 1930's Skåne, Sweden, and focuses on Sven, who is Cleft lip and palate and thus can't speak correctly. Most people consider him stupidity, and call him an Idiot (usage).

The relationship between these two men grows as they attempt to conquer the numbing isolation of homelessness.
