A small industrialist from Turin, who inherited the business from his father, finds himself facing a serious economic crisis with unease. This crisis is echoed by personal crises: misunderstandings with his wife and intemperance towards those around him.

A train travels across Italy toward Rome. Onboard is a professor who daydreams a conversation with a love that never was; a family of Albanian refugees who switch trains and steal a ticket; three brash Scottish soccer fans en route to a match; and a complaining widow travelling to a memorial service for her late husband who's accompanied by a community-service volunteer who's assisting her. Interactions among these Europeans turn on class and nationalism, courtesy and decorum, and opportunities for kindness.

They know the bag they have isn't theirs because it is stuffed with 500 million lire. At first they put out an ad for the owner; then they decide to keep it for themselves. Mayhem ensues when the bag's thuggish owners suddenly show up at the couple's housewarming party and demand they give every penny back. Later when one of them returns to threaten the bride, she accidentally kills him. His partner and a policeman chase the couple into the mountain retreat of the bride's brother, a frustrated writer. He finds the mess inspiring, and then is assisted by the gangster's ghost, who becomes his muse. The ghost gives them the advice they need for the couple to safely escape.

The two engage in acts of espionage in an attempt to discover something about each other's past. While rummaging through Antonio's cell, Raniero makes a shocking discovery about an unspeakable secret...

Igor is a musician, an honest but unlucky man who returned to Italy after being forced to leave his career in Berlin. Today, he works as a substitute teacher, with the dream of stability in which he himself believes little. Graziano is an outgoing but debt-ridden merchant, an opportunist, and a bit of a liar. Despite this, Graziano also loves music and wants to open a venue and pursue art to escape a life filled with schemes and small deceptions. These two men are very different but also very similar, with no particular hopes and little faith in the future. They have been grayed by the blows of life but possess a certain disenchanted irony and the need, more than the desire, to believe in a change. Their lives intersect, and it's an opportunity for both to try to realize that dream together or simply to build a friendship.
