Wounded at the Battle of Lepanto and recoverying in a Messina hospital, Miguel de Cervantes experiences a vision amidst fever and hallucinations. From the flames of burning books, Don Alonso Quijano is born—a man driven mad by tales of chivalry who transforms into the knight-errant Don Quixote. Accompanied by the simple Sancho Panza, lured by the promise of an island to rule, Quixote embarks on a quest where inns become castles and windmills turn into giants. Despite the cruel mockery of bored nobles and a series of crushing defeats, his madness reveals a disarming purity: he fights solely for justice and freedom, even as the world laughs. Betrayed and humiliated, he is eventually brought home in a cage, unable to survive without his ideals. As he dies, the scene shifts back to the Sicilian night: from the pain of war, Cervantes has forged a masterpiece—the stubborn dream of a more liberated humanity.

It follows Francesco Giuffrida, an honest Sicilian politician from childhood to his disappearance.

Until one day the physical education teacher, Michele Scimone, suggests his students to sign up for the Sant'Antonio Marathon. For Fatima it is the first real opportunity to be seized. But for the teacher, a shy and depressed former runner, tormented by an unresolved past and a failed relationship with Anna, the veil that Fatima wears is a cause of prejudice.

Love, business, anxieties, friendships, feuds, and resentments paint the picture of the main story, that of a group of criminals who for nearly fifteen years, from 1977 to 1992, cherished an illusion: that of conquering Rome. The Lebanese, Freddo, Dandi, Patrizia, and Commissioner Scialoja are some of the characters inspired by the true story of the Magliana gang. As stated by Aldo Grasso, the first season of the series gives more space to the crime scene, that is, the criminal exploits of the Magliana gang, while the second season delves deeper into the "behind the scenes" of the crime: thus, the gang's repositioning after a key plot event, and the effects and questions this has provoked in the protagonists' consciences.
