Helena is a sweet, honest, sensitive and a warrior woman who faces the premature pregnancy of her daughter Joyce, who in turn is abandoned by her boyfriend, the irresponsible Caio. The biggest problem is the girl's father, Assunção, Helena's ex-husband, who does not accept the situation. Lonely and alone, Helena awakens a passion for the endocrinologist Carlos Alberto, and has her feelings matched. But Carlos is committed to the possessive Paula. The girl's parents, Zuleika and Rômulo, anxiously await their daughter's wedding with Carlos, who will save the family from financial decay. Biology professor Edu is an idealistic man who moves with his son Lipe to the charming, fictional town of Nova Aliança, in Minas Gerais, in search of a better quality of life. Edu is a single father and tries to always be present in Lipe's life, attempting to keep him away from his mother, Mariana, whose drug addiction prevented her from raising her son. Edu's future father-in-law, João Mourão, is the biggest businessman in Nova Aliança: he owns a farm, a dairy, a meatpacking plant, and a transportation company. João takes issue with Edu when he discovers that the young man is a strong defender of nature and environmental protection laws, which turns him into a rival in the fight for a stretch of virgin forest.

The plot revolves around the romantic conflict involving four young people who have known each other since childhood. Antônio Mourão, an orphan raised by Father Ovídio, has two dreams in life: to graduate in Medicine – he has just passed the entrance exam – and to marry Rebeca, one of the daughters of his godfather, the Protestant pastor Bilac. Antônio and Rebeca end up separated thanks to the interference of Lívia, the youngest daughter of Pastor Bilac. Sensual and deceitful, she dreams of abandoning her life in São Tomás de Trás, working as a lacemaker and attending her father's church services, to live in the big city. She sees in Antônio a chance to fulfill her desire and, even knowing about the romance between the young man and her sister, she orchestrates a situation to seduce him and manages to get pregnant by him. The two are then forced to marry and move to the capital.

Frustrated in their relationships, Claudia and Vicente meet on a trip to Colombia. Chance sparks a great friendship between them, but a kiss puts their future in jeopardy.

Nonô Corrêa, a character inspired by Molière's "The Miser", is the story's protagonist. The orphan Zezinho crosses paths with Nonô and wins the neurotic gentleman's heart.

A Escolinha do Golias was a Brazilian television program presented and produced by SBT between 1990 and 1997. Returned to be displayed by SBT in 2007, in the schedule of the El Chavo.
