Miriam is staying with her friend Ida for a few months and attends Winterstein School with her during this time. She knows nothing about the magical community. But on her very first day at school, Mr. Morrison gives the class two new magical animals: Max receives the owl Muriel, and to Miriam's great surprise, she gets the energetic goblin Fitzgeraldo. Muriel quickly realises that Max may have stronger feelings for his best friend Leonie than he thinks. Miriam confides in Fitzgeraldo that she was an outsider at her old school.
