Two poets argue about the meaning of poetry and existence. Gregory thinks that an artist is an anarchist, Syme proclaims that the essence of poetry is the cure of disorder. Syme does not believe in Gregory's criminal disposition, which leads him to induct him into the illustrious bombers' club. Syme, a trained Scotland Yard detective, plays his role in the congregation so brilliantly that he uses it to dislodge Gregory and be elected to the seven-member college on Thursday. There is unrest in the group because the omniscient Sunday suspects an informer among them. There are also plans to assassinate the prime minister, which will be carried out on Wednesday by means of a bomb.
