Leben auf dem Vulkan
On the volcano
2011 · Released · 45 min
In the wake of the international financial crisis, Iceland was the first European country to be on the verge of national bankruptcy at the end of 2008. The country's three largest banks collapsed and the government was supported by the popular "cooking pot revolution", during which demonstrators made noise with cooking pots. The economy is now growing again, and the International Monetary Fund certifies that Iceland has made considerable progress. The country owes its resurgence not only to financial aid from other countries, but also to rigorous austerity measures. The political system was renewed using unconventional methods. Ordinary citizens are supposed to give the country a new constitution, and a fun party rules in the capital Reykjavik. The billion dollar dispute over the repayment of British and Dutch savings is not over yet, but citizens are once again looking to the future with confidence.
