In 1978, Antônia and Juca Tigre were on the verge of marriage when a fortune teller prophesied that the wedding would never happen—a prediction the couple dismissed. Yet, on the big day, the young woman left her fiancé at the altar and fled the city without explanation, harboring a mysterious secret; left behind, he became bitter and humiliated, swearing revenge. Twenty-five years later, their lives had taken very different paths: Juca had become the mayor and most powerful man in Santana de Bocaiúvas, while Antônia had married Joaquim and settled in the district of Formigas. The district suffered from a lack of municipal investment—including the absence of trash collection and healthcare services—all part of Juca’s scheme to exact revenge on his ex by plunging her community into a state of crisis. However, the mayor’s fiercest adversary was Léo—Antônia’s daughter and a community leader fighting for better conditions in Formigas—unaware that he was her father.
