The plot begins on the 40th birthday of Mendonça, a Physics teacher discouraged with life and work, who lives in a comfortable marriage with journalist Maria Rita. She, in turn, has her career on the rise and, seeing the crisis in her marriage, creates an interview program on the station where she works, in which she intends to interview personalities in their 40s, discussing achievements and plans. The broadcaster approves and, enthusiastically, Maria Rita begins producing the material, interviewing personalities such as Gilberto Gil, Henfil, Cacá Diegues, Luiz Carlos Maciel, Éder Jofre and Marina Colasanti, ultimately generating a special report. But a twist happens when Mendonça gets involved with Irene, one of his students, twenty years younger than him; while in parallel Maria Rita becomes involved with Volber. But in the end, they reconcile and start a new life together.
