Doctor Johan Steen has come to Saltö in the Stockholm archipelago to take over a medical practice after his father-in-law Axel Holtman. He probably retired mainly so that his daughter Eva could take over, but she did not follow but stayed in Africa. Johan's daughter Wilma accompanied him, and she has difficulty both with the loss of her mother and finding new friends.
