Count Claudieuse's country estate is near Paris. One night in 1871 it was on fire. Two shots are fired, the count is seriously injured, the countess and her children escape the flames with the help of the mentally weakened Cocoleu. This Cocoleu accuses Jacques von Beaucoran of the perpetrator's neighboring farm. Jacques protests his innocence.
