The Steffensen family lives on a farm in Southern Jutland, which has been under German rule for 60 years, when the First World War is suddenly upon us. The hope of regaining the lost Denmark lights up in the eyes of the border people, but the Steffensen family's farm is about to go to a forced auction. In secret, his son Erik flees across the border into Denmark to raise money. However, he does not return until the old parents are forced to leave their homes. But instead of getting into German hands, the farm is bought by the old servant, who can mysteriously pull large bundles of money out of his pocket and rob himself of rubble and stubble.
