When an epidemic kills more and more people, the doctor Pembroke defies the strict ban on dissecting corpses. Lord Surrey, the queen's lover, who also desires Pembroke's daughter Evelyne, then has the doctor executed and his assistant Leyde, whom Evelyne loves dearly, sentenced to long imprisonment. The jealous queen, however, thwarted Surrey's plans: she chose the young lady-in-waiting to be the wife of the Duke of Warwick and pardoned Leyde. Eventually Surrey has Evelyne kidnapped. But at the mercy of him, she falls into a rigor. When Leyde wants to dissect it, he makes a discovery.
