Based on the novel of the same name by Oleksandr Dovzhenko. About the childhood of the famous Ukrainian film director Oleksandr Dovzhenko, who was born on the ancient lands of Chernihiv, along the banks the Desna. The film consists of two parts. The first is the world shown through the impressions of the six-year-old Sashko. The second is the recollections and reasoning of Sashko, now an elderly colonel who liberates his native village during the war.

About the life and heroic death of the old Bolshevik-Lugansk resident, participant in the civil war, Aleksandr Yakovlevich Parkhomenko. In 1918, capturing Ukraine, the German occupiers sought to use the Haidamaks, the White Guards and the Greens in their struggle. By order of Voroshilov, Aleksandr Parkhomenko from Lugansk arrives in Tsaritsyn. At the same time, the Germans launched an active offensive. The "red" battalions are poorly armed, however, Parkhomenko manages to raise them to the attack and put the enemy to flight.

Chkalov and co-pilots Baidukov and Belyakov altogether had accomplished several nonstop long-distance flights. In June 1937, Chkalov set the world record, covering 12,000 kilometers in 63 hours of nonstop flight from Moscow to Vancouver, Washington, flying over the North Pole.

Lively and intelligent Valery Spout largely mitigates underline the drama of the protagonist, while Michael Sveta's role, though small, is bright and memorable.

On the surface, everything appears respectable in the Vanyushin family; life flows as it does in any merchant household. The protagonist of the film, Druyanov, is the director of a large boiler manufacturing plant — a talented man with vast life experience, capable of understanding current challenges and looking into the future. However, he is about to be dismissed from his position. A young appointee is in no hurry to take over and comes to familiarize himself with the plant. In the end, taking the side of the director who wants to reconstruct and modernize the workshops, he realizes that he has not yet reached Druyanov’s level.

A black child rescued from by Russian sailors, whom they name Maksimka, having overcome his fear of white people, turns out to be an unusually smart and kind little boy. The rude drunken sailor Ivan Luchkin was especially attached to the boy. Once it was Maksimka who managed to save Luchkin from foreign recruiters of labor.
