After getting expelled from the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts for his free-thinking ideas, young artist Kosta Khetagurov returns to his homeland of Iriston, known in Russian as Ossetia. Despite financial troubles and governmental persecution, he tirelessly advocates for the Ossetian people while honing his craft as a poet, playwright, and artist.

Young geologist Sergei Nesterov, having returned from the army, intends to continue his work, interrupted by the war, on exploring industrial deposits of Ural diamonds. His enthusiasm surprises his boss, puts his fiancée Varvara in an awkward position, and gives other geologists a perfect excuse to mock him. But he is warmly supported by the district committee secretary Salomatov. Sergei steadfastly pursues his goal and, in the end, finds the richest diamond deposits.

Eight-year-old Kirill has big problems: he struggles at school, his parents are boring, and he has nowhere to put his lame stray dog. In short, he is at odds with the whole world. Then he meets journalist Vadim, who is easy to get along with and interesting. Vadim's interest is genuine — after all, Kirill is named after his deceased friend.

The manager of the Belarusian collective farm Naideika Krasovich, inspired by the award at the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition for the high flax harvest, gives her word to double the harvest. In parallel to this story, a plot develops about the love of the tractor driver Zosya for the forester Yanka, who unrequitedly suffers for Nadeyka.
