Heated tempers, frustrated desires and dashed hopes plague a diverse group of individuals whose lives cross paths in Mexico City. There is the bar-owner's son, Chava, who yearns to emigrate to America. A poor barber, Abel, is madly in love with the gorgeous Alma, who eventually becomes a high-class prostitute. Finally, there is Susanita, the desperate spinster who pursues many love affairs in hopes of finding a husband.

In the 1940s, a small Mexican town has seen its last three mayors assassinated in rapid succession. A naive janitor is recruited to become the new mayor, and he believes he will modernize the little town and usher in a reign of peace. But the system corrupts him very quickly, and he takes to abusing his power while associating with an unscrupulous assortment of opportunists, hypocrites and criminals.

While Erendira, a beautiful teenage girl, has a surreal mystical vision, her grandmother's house catches on fire and burns to the ground. Her grandmother holds Erendira responsible and, in order to extract restitution from the girl, forces her into prostitution. Erendira's surreal mystical experiences continue while her grandmother grows rich from exploiting her.

Sandra Echeverria and David Zepeda star as the main protagonists, while Laisha Wilkins, Gabriel Soto, Rosa Maria Bianchi, and Juan Ferrara star as the main antagonists. She breaks up the romance and goes to sor Angelina's nunnery to become a nun. Sonia and Roberto try to separate Gerardo from Cecilia. Then Cecilia finds out the truth about her birth and meets padre Julio. Natalia discovers that Evangelina tries to appropriate the whole patrimony of Cecilia and Evangelina kills her.

Rayito de luz is a Mexican children's telenovela produced by Rosy Ocampo for Televisa and originally broadcast on Canal de las Estrellas from December 11, 2000, to January 5, 2001. It is based on the novel Marcelino pan y vino by José María Sánchez Silva. The story follows Juan de Luz, an abandoned boy who is found and raised by a group of monks in a small village. Known as "Rayito" for his cheerful spirit, he brings hope and joy to everyone around him while dreaming of one day meeting his mother.
