An all-knowing interlocutor guides us through a series of affairs in Vienna, 1900. A soldier meets an eager young lady of the evening. Later he has an affair with a young lady, who becomes a maid and does similarly with the young man of the house. The young man seduces a married woman. On and on, spinning on the gay carousel of life.

Old Karl Knesebeck has long been head waiter and rules his waiters with an iron fist at the hotel. When the business passes into the hands of the heirs after the owner's death, he's in a difficult position. The unscrupulous Alwin makes advances toward Niddy, the owner's daughter, whose well-being Knesebeck watches over like a father. Alwin demotes the old man to toilet attendant – a tragedy that Knesebeck tries to salvage, especially since Niddy is about to marry Alwin and another man would actually be better for her...

The count Egge is barely a visitor in his Alpine family castle Hubertus, being preoccupied with hunting. He's furious when his young adult sons miss an annual municipal hunting concession auction, being both in love with local commoner girls, deemed undesirable although their mother was an actress herself, as is their sister's lover, painter Forbeck. So comital heir Tassilo marries in secret, spare heir Willy courts 'discretely'. Then tragedy strikes, with further consequences for the whole comital family.

Hofreiter, who has a relationship with Natter's wife Adele, confronts Natter after the latter launches a newspaper advertisement linking the suicide of an admirer of Hofreiter's wife to Hofreiter himself. In his tried and tested manner, Hofreiter challenges his vis-a-vis to a duel, but contrary to all etiquette, Natter refuses and exposes Hofreiter's system of vain notions of honor by confronting him with "genuine feeling". Natter: "I am hopelessly in love with my wife. That happens, dear Hofreiter. Nothing helps. That's just the way it is." His revenge is of a different nature, because he gets out of Hofreiter's narcissistic game and disavows his deceptive maneuvers and strategies of shifting blame.

Der Kommissar is a German television series about a group of detectives of the Munich homicide squad. All 97 episodes, which were shot in black-and-white and first broadcast between 1969 and 1976, were written by Herbert Reinecker and starred Erik Ode as Kommissar Herbert Keller.
