Poland under Stalinist rule, 1953. A young nun Anna is brought to a prison where an influential priest is kept in. She discovers the priest is the man she loved a few years before. Communist authorities try to make her spy on him now.

The story takes place in the second half of the 1950s. A young journalist wants to establish himself in his profession and sort out his personal life, but he is unable to distance himself from the grim events he witnesses. The editor-in-chief sends him to a village near Warsaw, which is to be absorbed by the city, to write a report on the civilizational changes taking place there. The journalist learns the story of a young prisoner awaiting execution on death row and becomes involved in the convict's case.

Berlin, 1990. At the invitation of his actor friends, who have already lived abroad for many years, Max, a Polish theater director, comes to Berlin. They begin to work together. They try to realize their dream: to stage a play, the staging of which was prevented by the imposition of martial law ten years earlier. The way they raise funds (selling pieces of the "historic" wall) and struggle against the heartless machinery of bureaucracy forms the axis of the film. In their efforts, the four protagonists are assisted by Regina, a translator familiar with local customs and practices. The film deals with the problems of artists in the new, commercializing reality.

Bettleheim discovers that Schneider possesses powers of empathy and of clairvoyance, such that could aid suicidal patients. After the war, with one friend as his manager and another as his lover, Schneider changes his name to Eric Jan Hanussen and goes to Berlin, as a hypnotist and clairvoyant performing in halls and theaters. He always speaks the truth, which brings him to the attention of powerful Nazis. He predicts their rise (good propaganda for them) and their violence (not so good). He's in pain and at risk. What is Hanussen's future?

1956. Stefan Madejski, a former KBW lieutenant, is released from prison and rehabilitated. Ten years ago he fought against the gangs, but his brutal and ruthless methods aroused opposition. Because he let go of a band member, his former AK unit colleague, he was brought before a military court and sentenced to fifteen years. Now he is trying to find the people who put him in prison. These encounters give him nothing but bitterness.

Jan weds his mentally ill wife Joanna at her insistence, but her increasing dependence on sedatives, and the clandestine extra pills supplied by Jan, their son Piotr and Jan’s friend Maria, leads to Joanna’s fatal overdose. 1982, martial law is in force. Krzysztof works as a teacher. Since his wife Gosia left for a scholarship in Baltimore, he has been living alone. He misses her and often writes letters to her. He hopes that she will leave Poland and join him, but at the moment this is impossible. One night, he has a strange dream. In it, he is running through a mist-covered meadow full of purple flowers. Nearby, on a railway embankment, he hears a woman's delirious cries. In the darkness, the lights of a passing train slowly begin to grow brighter. Before he can save her, the dream ends. When Krzysztof has the same dream a month later, he wonders about its meaning. After receiving a letter from his wife saying that she intends to remarry, Krzysztof feels lost. While browsing through an atlas of reproductions of paintings, he comes across the works of a young painter. As he looks through them, he discovers that the paintings correspond to his visions. Krzysztof decides to find the artist.

One day, hospital orderlies, watching corpse in the morgue, recognize film director. Man, even though he died, he begins to remember his life. He made a career making movies, had numerous mistresses, but never realized their dreams. His life was interspersed with many setbacks that enfeebled him from the inside. Although he made a career in film, he was not happy with his life.

Alice was sitting in the park one day. She sees a jogger called Rabbit. When she first meets him she thinks he's a jerk later she finds him nice and relaxing. She falls in love with him. He takes her to Queenie's party. Rabbit later finds out that Queenie wants to kill him. So Rabbit packs up to leave the country. When Alice finds this out she commits suicide which brings her into a fantasy world.
