The film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Peter Jilemnický is a drama about the life of poor Kysuce miners, which takes place in the thirties during the economic crisis. During the peak wave of emigration, the dream of a better life drives thousands of people to America for work. Others, in order to support their families, leave for the surrounding towns. The first part captures the life of Martin Pichandu in the development of his craft, masonry; in the second part, his son is center stage living in a period of socio-political crisis, which ultimately results in the first World War. After originally airing on Czechoslovakian television in 1983 as a four-part 226-minute mini-series, this production received a 163-minute theatrical release in 1984.

František Cepl is a young man from a simple family. He graduated from a real school and was going to study technology. When the occupation came, he had to work as a factory assistant. There he meets an older man named Telec, whom everyone knows as Hrabě. He impresses František with his ostentatious disdain for work and his shameless flirtation with women. František, whom the Count calls Papilio (butterfly butterfly), is filled with youthful ideals, while the Count, on the other hand, is an extract of the crudest individualism. He has worked his way up from a student at a business academy and a theatre actor to a member of a pre-war gallery. He blackmails, steals, drinks, abuses women and, in a way, Papilio himself.

A love story of a couple of mature people of completely different characters, who lived and worked side by side for years only as colleagues, but whose accidental trip to Slovakia to attend the wedding of Hedin's sister brought them closer, probably for the rest of their lives...

A film based on short stories by K. Przerwu-Tetmajer's Grey Eyes and M. Urban's Melted Heart. The heroines of both stories are young women with the same name - Kristka. They fight for their love, they both love with humility and surrender, but when necessary, they can be decisive and uncompromising. One is cruel in her love, the other fights for it with touching tenderness and kindness. These are not idyllic loves; they are full of life, full of raging blood...
