In this thriller, a UNESCO translator stumbles across a group which is hiding and supporting Nazis and facilitating their travel around the world. She had been given an assignment to study the work of a writer who recently had died, and the conspiracy is revealed in materials he left behind. A young engineer, Lucien Rombeau, is sent to the Sahara by the oil company that employs him, which wants to put an end to drilling that it considers unproductive. He ends up agreeing with the chief prospector, who refuses to stop the work and is convinced that prospecting will not be in vain.
