A former officer of the Separate Border Guard Corps accepts an offer to head the customs service of the young Soviet state.

A young master, Vladimir Dubrovsky, comes to the estate to visit his father, who has long been in litigation with his neighbor, the despotic landowner Troekurov. Having seriously insulted Dubrovsky Sr., Troekurov tries to go to peace, but the proud old man is adamant.

From 1917 to the end of the 1980s, Soviet border guards are stationed on the territory of the USSR from the Far East to the western borders.
