Images and sounds expose the duality of Portugal during the days of WW2: a peaceful, god-loving, rural country, providing an escape route for over one hundred thousand European refugees to the Americas; and a political and cultural elite that disguised their Nazi inclinations just enough to play its neutral role in international politics.

In Portugal, during the night of April 24-25, 1974, a peaceful uprising put an end to the last government of the Estado Novo, the authoritarian regime established in 1933 by dictator António de Oliveira Salazar (1889-1970), paving the way for full democracy: a chronicle of the Carnation Revolution.

Owners of Portugal is a documentary about one hundred years of economic power. The film portrays the State protection to families that dominated the country's economy, their strategies for power and wealth accumulation. Mello, Champalimaud, Espírito Santo - big families intersect by marriage and integrate by finance. Threatened by the end of the dictatorship, their power is restored under democracy, through privatization and promiscuity with politics. New economic groups - Amorim, Sonae, Jerónimo Martins - grow on the same basis. As the crisis unravels the limits of Portuguese economic development model, this film presents the actors and the main choices that brought us here.

Franco on Trial is the new film by Dietmar Post and Lucía Palacios. After the success of Franco's Settlers, their first encounter with Franco's dictatorship, they are now setting their sights on one of the darkest chapters of European history: the presumed organized extermination that took place during the coup, the war, and the subsequent dictatorship led by Franco, as well as Argentina's current effort, by invoking the principle of universal jurisdiction, to prosecute Francoists accused of committing crimes against humanity. The film is also a sore reminder of an issue that still stands today: the clear-cut accountability held by Germany, Italy, and Portugal. The film accomplishes to give both sides a voice - those against whom the killing has been directed; and the side of the perpetrators.
