A Chilean returning to Santiago to find out what has happened to his native country while he has been away, discovers much about himself.

The head of a plumbing and electrical workshop is a victim of bureaucracy in public offices and is unable to pay his debts, so his workshop is closed. With a lot of luck he manages to get a repair job in the house of a minister, then he enters to work in a ministry, also becoming a bureaucrat. Taking advantage of his friendship with the minister, he is promoted to become chief archivist, but he realizes the routine that is filling the job and resigns.

Set in Santiago de Chile in the 50's and divided into three stories. The first story is about a young woman who has just discovered that she's pregnant. The father refuses to cooperate. The second story is set in Arica, and concerns smuggling in northern Chile. The third and final story, "Ojos de gato", concerns a cashier that is bewitched by a mysterious "Lady in Black".

Rosita is a young girl suffering from her parents' divorce. Desperate and not knowing where to turn, she finds refuge in a church. The rituals of the Eucharist, the advice of a priest and her faith in God give her back the hope she needs to continue with her life.

Martín Rivas is a poor but distinguished young man, he moves from Northern Chile to study law in the capital. His diminished economic condition forces him to stay at the home of Don Dámaso Encina, leader of a rich Chilean family.
