Two obnoxious and dim-witted misfits attempt to save a school for needy children by attempting to sneak into the wealthy high society of Palm Beach to get the money needed for their cause.

Two scientists involved in chimpanzee research -- one maintaining that the animals should be kept in their native habitat in Africa without human interference, the other trying to train them in sign language in a domesticated atmosphere -- join forces when they learn that the government plans to cut off the language grant and use the chimps for radiation research.

Jack Costello is a retired cop and now private detective who lives in Miami, who handles a myriad of cases for unusual clients. At his side are old police buddy Sam Bosley and cartoonist-turned-amateur sleuth Jean Philippe Dumas, who is using Costello as an influence and has nicknamed the burly detective "Extralarge." In the second series, Costello faces other dangerous cases, again with Bosley and Archibald, the son of an old friend, who Costello amusingly nicknames "Dumas."
