The Mole's goal is to make the assignments fail and keep the amount of money earned as low as possible. The other candidates do not know who the Mole is and need to unmask them. At the end of every episode, the candidates take a multiple-choice test about the mole's identity. The person who gives the least amount of correct answers is "executed" and must leave. This process continues until only two contestants and the Mole remain. The winner is the person with the most correct answers in the final test and they get all of the money earned in previous stages of the game.

The first season was broadcast only in the Netherlands, whereas starting with season 2, the show became a joint Belgian-Dutch production. The show premiered on 4 September 2008 in the Netherlands and expanded to broadcasting in Flanders for its second season on 1 September 2009. Like other series in the So You Think You Can Dance franchise, the show is a talent search that uses a combination of expert judge decisions and call-in voting to advance dancers from a wide variety of backgrounds through various different dance styles. A season winner is awarded a cash prize, funded study-abroad or work-abroad opportunities and other prizes, as well as the title "The Netherlands' Favourite Dancer". The winners of the first five seasons have been Ivan Paulovich, Els Smekens, Floris Bosveld, Nina Plantefève-Castryck and Frederic De Smet. The first season was hosted by singer Elise van der Horst. From the second season on, Dennis Weening and An Lemmens have co-presented.

They receive a small allowance, just €50, and must travel as far as possible from the starting point within fourteen days. Along the way, they must be resourceful enough to earn money, for example, by washing dishes or working the land. They also have to arrange their own transportation, for example, by scooter, tuk-tuk, or hitchhiking. Luxury hotels are also out of the question, so this journey requires a lot of perseverance. After two weeks, we'll see which team has traveled the furthest from the starting point. That team wins.
