Nebojsa was the nickname given to a young man who was not afraid of anything. One day he heard that a cursed princess lived in a castle. Whoever could uncurse her would have her as his wife and half the kingdom. Dear Nebojsa went out into the world to try his luck. He experienced many adventures until he reached the goal of his journey. But the greatest danger awaited him in the mysterious castle. If he wanted to uncurse the princess, he had to fulfill a difficult condition: no matter what evil was done around him and to him, he was not allowed to reveal, even with a word, that he was afraid. Well, he certainly wouldn't be Nebojsa if he didn't fulfill this task. And so he won the princess and the kingdom.

They break through the wall into their neighbour's comfortable flat, from which they borrow not only additional square feets of space, but things of his personal property as well.

Just before his departure, they have sex and she eventually becomes single mother of a baby girl. Now, 18 years later, her daughter Paulina commutes by bus to work in the nearby city, which gives the village gossips the occasional opportunity to remind her of her unknown father. A resultant conflict with her mother makes Paulina take up residence in the city. Johanka, prodded by her also-single friend Jozefka who maintains that a woman without a man is nothing, begins to woo the new teacher Jarek only to discover later that he is married. Paulina, in the meantime, loses her virginity to the soldier Jirka who promptly makes himself scarce. Johanka fails to consider that she actually has a better life than some of her married neighbors, begins to see.

Director Andrej Lettrich's novel adaptation talks of plotting, forbidden love. family discord, and struggle for heritage and power. The story is engaging thanks to the impressive performances of popular actors, dramatic situations, and sensitive music. Red Wine is not so much inventive in terms of auteurship as it is a work of excellent craftsmanship. The resulting picture is a costume production neatly adapted to the character of Slovak rural life in the past.
