SMAP×SMAP was an ongoing weekly Japanese variety show on Kansai TV and Fuji TV starring the members of SMAP. The show began on April 15, 1996 and it aired from 22:00 to 22:54 every Monday. The show's usual ratings were higher than 20%, which is considered high since most variety shows range from 10-20%. Each episode begins a variety of skits, comedic performances, and/or games.  These are followed by Bistro SMAP, in which the SMAP members compete against each other to impress celebrity judges with their gourmet cooking.  Last is a musical performance by SMAP which may include celebrity guests, as well.

The drama revolves around Kounotori Sakura, an Ob-Gyn doctor working at the Persona General Medical Centre who is also a gifted jazz pianist. His mother had died in childbirth and he was brought up in an orphanage, which is what fueled his ambition to be an ob-gyn. Four young physicians are assigned to the “Doctor Helicopter” system, the latest medical system where a medical team is dispatched to the patients via helicopter to provide medical care in the field as soon as possible. The doctors experience traumatic medical situations, deal with personal ambitions, and witness the fragility of life, all while growing personally and professionally.

The Mobile Investigative Unit (known as "MIU") of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department attempts to solve cases within 24 hours. Detective Kazumi Shima is selected as a new member of MIU. He is intelligent, with excellent observation and communication skills. Yet, he does not trust other people. He is unable to find a partner in MIU and is ordered to partner with Police Officer Ai Ibuki, who works at a police substation. Ibuki applied for MIU, but he failed. He is in excellent physical condition, but he lacks knowledge and experience as a detective. Shima learns about Ibuki's background and he becomes more nervous. Finally, Shima has his first meeting with Ibuki.

"Divorce Lawyer" also tells the story of how difficult it is to judge love and relationships in legal terms.

Detective Tomo Yashiro is ordered to transfer to the Sixth Special Investigations Unit. it is in charge of deciphering documents of unsolved cases she begins work in her new post along with a senior detective Risa Narum who is called the expert of document deciphering for her unusual ability to predict the personality and thoughts of a writer from writings
