In 1889, a conflict arose between the decadent and ruined rural aristocracy following the liberation of slaves and a new class of wealthy individuals, comprised of entrepreneurs emerging from the republican industrial class, interested in free labor. In the city of Ouro Negro, in the interior of São Paulo state, the conservative, aristocratic, and monarchist Almeida Santos family, which traditionally dominated the region, began to lose ground to the Lobo Ferraz family, representing the nascent progressive and republican bourgeoisie.

Daniel is a psychic who can see the past and predict the future. As a child, he had a vision that his brother-in-law, João Henrique, was cheating on his sister, Ester, which led her to separate from her husband. As an adult, his psychic abilities increase and Daniel uses them for his own benefit, rather than to help people. He sets up a practice and appears on TV, becoming famous and known as “the Prophet.” Daniel begins to grow rich, important, and cold.

The patriarch, Salvador Maldonado—a conservative man—keeps a tight rein on the clan, maintaining control over both the business and his children: Joana, an elegant and snobbish woman who is the staunchest defender of the views held by Pops, as the children call him; Téo, who has always silently submitted to the old man's high-handedness; Walter, dominated by his older sister and his father's favorite; and Lalucha, the youngest, a film student who challenges the status quo and rebels against the family's stuffy conservatism.

According to an amazonian legend, every month, during the full moon, a brazilian fishing village receives a mysterious guest: the Dolphin, who transforms into a human to seduce and be loved by women and hated by men. One of her conquests is the daughter of a fisherman, who has a son with the Dolphin. He constantly reappears to seduce her, and even when she marries, he continues to look for her. This provokes the ire of the husband, who wants to kill him anyway.

Vicente, a tax collector, is sent to a distant region to defy the dominion of Melo, a powerful landowner. When Melo's henchmen burn down the collector's office building, the government retaliates by deploying soldiers, overseen by Carvalho, a hard-headed judge. Carvalho orders the soldiers to invade Melo's land, which prompts the start of a full-blown war.

A series of murders begins to haunt Cordilheira, a small town near São Paulo, Brazil. The investigations show there is a love triangle involved.

The sierras of southern Brazil, 1963. The son of an French man and a Brazilian woman, Tony is a young man with a profound love of cinema and poetry. After graduating from college he returns to his small town in rural Brazil, to find out that his father had left for good, back to France. Tony then looks for the company of his fathers friends in search of information and references of a lost male role-model. He becomes a school teacher and a male figure to kids, in an attempt to provide them with something he lacks himself. A series of developments lead him to a surprising final lead on his fathers' whereabouts and reasons for leaving.
