Shakespeare’in Kral Lear’inde, 16. yy’ın yaşlı lordu Lear krallığını üç kızı arasında paylaştırmaya karar verir. Her biri ülkenin üç farklı yerindeki kalelerde yaşayarak sadakatlarini kanıtlayacaklardır. Büyük kızları menfaatleri için sahte bir samimiyet içine girerken, babasına duyduğu bağlılıkla en küçük kızı O’nun gerçekleri görmesi için uğraşır. Ran İngiliz edebiyatına ait bu eserinin Japon uyarlaması. Orjinalindeki kız çocuklar erkek olarak değiştirilmiş ve Kral Lear karakteri de Lord Hidetora Ichimonji olarak karşımıza çıkıyor.

17. yüzyıl Japonya'sında savaş yılları geride kalınca samuraylar da işsiz kalmıştır. Monarşik düzenin öğüttüğü Ronin'ler, barış zamanında birer posa olarak görülmekte ve birer birer harakiri yapmaktadırlar. Hatta açlık yüzünden onurlarından bile vazgeçip, otorite sahiplerinden para istemekte ve aksi taktirde kapılarının önünde harakiri yapmakla tehdit etmektedirler. Böyle bir ortamda yine eski bir samuray olan Hanshiro, yerel bir lordun huzuruna çıkar ve seppuku töreni için izin ister.

2. Dünya Savaşı’nda, Amerika’nın sabrının taşmasına neden olan Pearl Harbor baskınını, hem Japonlar’ın hem de Amerikalılar’ın bakış açılarıyla anlatmayı deneyen, gösterişli bir ortak yapım. Baskının öncesi ve sonrasında yaşanan olaylar dizisini de perdeye taşıyan “Tora! Tora! Tora!”, özellikle o ünlü saldırı sahnelerinde ürkütücü bir gerçekçiliği yakalamayı başarıyor. Film, 1939 yılında Amiral Isoroku Yamamoto’nun Japon Kraliyet Donanması’nın komutasını üzerine almasıyla başlar. Eğitimini Harvard’da tamamlamış, ateşli bir milliyetçi olan komutan, önceleri Amerika’yla yapılacak bir savaşa karşı olmasına rağmen, zamanla fikrini değiştirir. Japonya’nın, Asya’nın en güçlü devleti olma arzusu onu da etkiler ve vargücüyle Amerikalılar’la savaşmaya hazırlanır. Öte yandan ABD cephesinde, Japonya’nın egemenliğine karşı çıkma hazırlıkları başlar.

"Düşler" farklı hikayelerin anlatıldığı, birbirinden bağımsız sekiz kısa filmden oluşuyor. "Sunshine Through The Rain", ailesi tarafından dışarı çıkması yasaklanan bir çocuğun, toplum tarafından kutsal sayılan bir günde yaşadıklarını anlatıyor. "The Peach Orchard", insanoğlunun doğaya müdahelesinin yol açtığı sonuçları vurgularken, "The Blizzard"la bir dağda mahsur kalan insanların dramını perdeye yansıtıyor. "The Tunnel", ölümlerinden sorumlu olduğu ölü askerleri bir tünel çıkışında gören adamın dramını anlatıyor... "Crows", ünlü ressam Vincent Van Gogh'un yaşadığı bölgeye ve sanatına dair bir çalışma.. Güneşli bir yaz gününde yaşananları "Village of the Watermills" ile anlatan Kurosawa, son iki bölümde ("Mount Fuji in Red" ve "The Weeping Demon") nükleer tehlikenin insanlık üzerindeki etkilerini araştırıyor..

Dodes'ka-den, 1970 yılı yapımı Japon sinema filmidir. Filmin yönetmenliğini ve senaristliğini Japon sinemacı Akira Kurosava yapmıştır.

Yemek ve yemek fetişizmi üzerine eğlenceli bir film olan 'Tampopo'da içiçe geçmiş çok karakterli pek çok öykü anlatılıyor. Tampopo kendi restoranında özensiz ‘Ramen’ pişirip durmaktadır. Goro ve arkadaşı ise yol üstünde karınlarını doyurmaya gelmişlerdir fakat kendilerini Tampopo’ya aşçılıkta ustalaşmakta yardım ederken bulurlar. Sadece lezzetli Ramen pişirmenin püf noktalarını öğrenmek değil, alakalı alakasız ‘an’larla kafanızı karıştıracak veya güldürecek sade bir hikayenin sıradan olması gerekmediğini hatırlamak da gayet güzeldir. Yaptıklarınızın sürekli sıradan, hatta ortalamanın altında kalması inanılmaz can sıkıcıdır.

Masaki, a baseball player and gas-station attendant, gets into trouble with the local Yakuza and goes to Okinawa to get a gun to defend himself. There he meets Uehara, a tough gangster, who is in serious debt to the yakuza and planning revenge.

Following the detonation of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese military and the government clash over the demand from the Allies for unconditional surrender. Minister of the Army Anami leads the military officers who propose to fight on, even to the death of every Japanese citizen. Emperor Hirohito, however, joins with his ministers in asking the unthinkable, the peaceful surrender of Japan. When the military plots a coup to overthrow the Emperor's civilian government, Anami must face the choice between his desires and loyalty to his Emperor.

"Young People" is a story about the lives of four brothers and a sister, Sato. After the death of his parents, the older brother, Taro, who works in construction, decides to replace them. The second brother, Jiro, is a truck driver. The third, Saburo, is a student, dreams of a better future for the whole family are connected with him, with his career. Brothers and sisters are fighting to give him a higher education. And, finally, the youngest of the brothers, Suekichi, is also going to enter the university after graduation. The life of the Sato family is complicated. Taro is kind, but limited, not always able to find a common language with his brothers and sister Orie. The girl cannot stand the despotism of her brother, leaves her home and goes to work at the factory. With her departure, everything in the house goes upside down. Suekichi fails her university entrance exams, Orie is forced to return to her family.

The Americans are swiftly closing on Okinawa, an island just south of the Japanese mainland. The Imperial command sends top generals and several army divisions to defend it at all costs. The mission quickly degenerates as vital resources and troops are diverted to other islands. After a civilian evacuation ends in tragedy most of non-combatants are forced to remain on the island. Many convert to soldier status. Tokyo sends mixed messages that squander time and resources, as when they order the defenders to build an airstrip for aircraft that never come. The truth soon becomes obvious: the high command decides that the island cannot be held and effectively abandons the Okinawan defenders. When the Americans land many troops are deployed in the wrong places. As the slaughter mounts, a suicidal attitude takes hold. Okinawa becomes a death trap, for civilian volunteers and non-combatants as well.

Kinoshita Kaori (Nakayama Miho), a native of Nagano, was allowed to live alone in Tokyo for two years during her junior college years. Her friend Noriko (Sendo Atsuko) had good grades in junior college and had received a job offer from a major company, but the offer was rescinded due to her living alone. Meanwhile, Tomoko (Kawai Michiko), who dreams of becoming a reporter while job hunting, is also struggling to balance her dreams and reality. One day, Kaori visits a small company with her resume in hand, where she meets the company president, Yoshizawa (Oda Yuji). Yoshizawa accepts Kaori without even a proper interview, and despite her misgivings about the company, she soon finds herself drawn to Yoshizawa.

In a small village in the Kanto regioin, which is surrounded by mountains, residents and a management consultant (Shosuke Tanihara) struggle to rebuild the village through its only industry, farming.

While working in the leisurely atmosphere at a food company's factory, Futaro is asked to return to their corporate headquarters by his good friend. Unfortunately, he finds himself assistant to Izumi, a highly demanding expert on Italian food culture. Futaro gets off to a rocky start with his new female boss, and always seems to be saying or doing the wrong thing. He also doesn't seem to be particularly suited to his new position on the Italian Restaurant Project, considering he doesn't even like tomatoes! But Futaro may still have a few tricks left up his sleeve that he can use to win over Izumi and find success in his new job.

An industrialist is diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is abroad in Europe at the time, and a glimpse of a Japanese woman in that setting causes him to imagine her as the personification of his impending fate. As his dialogue with his imagined mortality continues, he meets the living woman, the template for his fantasy, and together, they tour rural churches. Gradually, he comes to some kind of peace about the diagnosis. When he returns to Japan, he is met with a series of challenges that profoundly test the lessons he has learned.
