Dokuz buçuk yaşındaki Antoine ceza olarak aldığı ödevi yapamaz ve ertesi gün okula gitmekten korkar. Arkadaşı René ile birlikte okulu kırıp haytalık yaparlar. Near the end of World War II, General Dietrich von Choltitz receives orders to burn down Paris if it becomes clear the Allies are going to invade, or if he's unable to maintain control of the city. Öyküde 1827-1828 yılları Fransa’sına panaromik bir bakış gözler önüne serilmektedir. Bu sahne özellikle akılda tutulmalıdır, filmin son sahnelerinde bu tip bir panaromik bakışa adeta simetri oluştururcasına geri dönülecektir. Açılış sahnesinin etrafında bulunan binalar seyircide derinlik hissi oluşturacak şekilde dizilmiştir ki bu izleyicide bir göz yanılması uyandırır. Ayrıca bu küçük setlerde, göz yanılması ve algı oyunlarıyla seyirciyi büyülemek amacıyla cüceler kullanılmıştır.

En azından Alman subayı Albay Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield)'in aldığı istihbarat bu yöndedir. Yukarıdan ona gelen emir Jeu de Paume müzesindeki paha biçilmez sanat eserlerini anayurda getirmesi şeklindedir. Eserler Almanya'ya bir trenle sevk edilecek; demiryolu müfettişi Labiche (Burt Lancaster) de bu sevkiyata engel olmaya çalışacaktır. Tren sahnelerinde gerçek trenler ve istasyonlar kullanmakta ısrar eden Frankenheimer'in ne kadar haklı olduğu görülmüş, filme son derece gerçekçi ve heyecan dolu bir hava katan sahneler birçok yönetmeni etkilemişti.
