Dizi8.11950'lerin sonunda Belo Horizonte: Saygın bir ailenin kızı olan Hilda, düğün gününde damadını kilisede bırakıp doğruca şehrin genelev bölgesine gider. “Hilda Furacão” adıyla şehrin en ünlü fahişesi olur. Her şey yolunda gidebilirdi, ta ki aziz olduğu söylenen genç rahip adayı Birader Malthus'a âşık olana dek. Ancak genç adam, en küçük günaha bile tahammülü olmayan muhafazakâr rahip Peder Nelson'ın katı öğretisi altındadır. Malthus'un eski dostu, komünist muhabir Roberto (hikâyenin asıl yazarı), Hilda'nın bu radikal değişiminin ardındaki gerçek nedenleri ortaya çıkarmak için onunla röportaj yapmaya çalışınca işler daha da zorlaşır. Bu arada orta sınıf, Brezilya siyasetindeki “sol tehdit”ten dehşete düşmüştür.
