İkinci dünya savaşında çok direnişli örgütün lideri Victor Lazlow Alman konsantrsayonu kampından kaçarak Casablanca'ya gelir. Amacı Lizbon'a oradanda ABD'ye iltica etmektir. Fakat bütün umutları şans eseri Casablanca'nın en meşhur gece kulübünün sahibi olan Rick'e bağlamıştır. Rick kaçış için gerekli olan pasaportlara sahib olan tek kişidir. Öte yandan Ricky'in Victor'un yakalanması ya da öldürülmesi için gerekli nedeni vardır. Victor'un karısı Ilsa Ricky bir zamanlar kendisini terk ettiğine inandığı ve kalbinin derinliklerine gömdüğü büyük aşkıdır.

Joe Gillis (William Holden) genç bir senaristtir. Film, Gills’in bir havuzda kanlar içinde yatarken görüntüsü ile başlar ve daha sonra altı ay öncesine gideriz. Film çekildiğinde 48 yaşında olan Stewart 25 yaşındaki Lindbergh'i oynuyordu.
