Genç aktivist Sarafina, öğretmeni Mary'nin (Whoopi Goldberg) tutuklanması ve annesinin (Miriam Makeba) boyun eğişiyle yüzleşir. Polis şiddetiyle bastırılan protestolar, gençlerin mücadelesini simgeler. Müzikalde direniş, umut dolu bir mezuniyetle son bulur.
