Julian Schnabel’e Cannes Festivali’nde En İyi Yönetmen Ödülü’nü getiren “Dalgıç ve Kelebek”, gerçek bir yaşam hikâyesinden yola çıkarak yazılan bir kitaptan uyarlandı. Geçirdiği beyin kanaması nedeniyle 43 yaşında sol gözünün görme yetisi hariç bütün bedensel fonksiyonlarını yitiren Jean-Dominique Bauby hayatı zihninde yaşamaya başlar ve dış dünyayla bağını sol gözü aracılığıyla kurar.

1931'de Paris'te Anais Nin (Maria de Medeiros), Henry Miller (Fred Ward)ve eşi June (Uma Thurman) ile tanışıyor. İkisinden de etkilenen Nin, kocası Hugo (Richard E.Grant), Henry ve başkalarıyla cinselliğini keşfediyor. June, Paris ve New York arasında iş gezileri yaparken Henry de bir kitap yazıyor. Hugo ve Nin kitabı finanse ediyorlar ama June Henry'nin nin'e karşı olan davranışlarından rahatsızlık duyuyor. Nin ve Henry de yazma stilleri konusunda devamlı kavga ediyorlar.

Max Paris'te yaşamaktadır. Bir gün şans eseri kafede en büyük aşkı Lisa'yı görür. Çok geçmeden Amerikalı gönüllülerden bazıları, iyi teçhizatlı Alman pilotlarıyla baş edebilmek ve müttefiklerin savaş çabalarına yardımcı olabilmek için kendi özel filolarını oluştururlar. Ölümüne mücadeleyi göze alan "Flyboys" Kahraman Pilotlar filosu bu şekilde meydana gelir.
