In 1942, in an occupied Paris, the apolitical grocer Edmond Batignole lives with his wife and daughter in a small apartment in the building of his grocery. When his future son-in-law and collaborator of the German Pierre-Jean Lamour calls the Nazis to arrest the Jewish Bernstein family, they move to the confiscated apartment. Some days later, the young Simon Bernstein escapes from the Germans and comes to his former home. When Batignole finds him, he feels sorry for the boy and lodges him, hiding Simon from Pierre-Jean and also from his wife. Later, two cousins of Simon meet him in the cellar of the grocery. When Pierre-Jean finds the children, Batignole decides to travel with the children to Switzerland.

15-year-old Jack is on a French Exchange trip with his school. But his mum won't stop ringing to check-up on him. On his last night, his host falls ill and Jack is forced to spend the last day of the trip with his French teacher; the sexy, chic, mysterious Camille. An aircraft mechanic takes part in a ruby theft for debt repaying to keep his small factory, but his glide goes wrong on its way home and falls down in a zoo. Little girl Chloe finds him in mistake for an angel. He wants to find the ruby and keeps the children safe from harm, so he pretends to be an angel and lives with Chloe for days. They catch the criminals and return the ruby to police. The mechanic cures Chloe's friend with his own blood, and falls in love with her mother ultimately.

Young orphan Rémi lives with his impoverished adoptive parents on a farm. When money runs out, his father sells Rémi to homeless street performer Vitalis, once a famous opera singer who ended up destitute after a tragic love story.
