Jean-Luc Godard'ın başyapıtı Pierrot le Fou (Çılgın Pierrot), yönetmenin uzun ve parlak kariyerinde önemli bir kilometre taşıdır. Karışık bir dönüm noktası olan film, Godard'ın Breathless (Nefes Nefese, 1960) ve Vivre Sa Vie (Hayatını Yaşamak, 1962) gibi eserlerinin deneysel yaşam gücü ve Week End (Hafta Sonu, 1967) ve Wind from the East (1969) gibi son derece politik, alaycı ve acı bir biçimde komik filmleri arasında kalır. Pierrot le Fou, her ikisinin öğelerini de barındırır ve sırf bu nedenle izleyici için zengin bir deneyim fırsatı sunar. Ancak filmin sahip olduğu bir başka koz da gerçek güzellik duygusu. Eleştirmenler, Godard'ın polemik yaratan üslubuna karşın zarif bir biçimde güzel filmler de yaptığını unutmaya meyilli ama Pierrot le Fou, hiç kuşkusuz Contempt'le (1963) birlikte, bu açıdan değerlendirilmeli.

Ne var ki Lemmy olaylar esnasında çekici bir kadın olan Natacha'yla tanışıp aşık olur. Güzel kadın, Alpha 60'ı tasarlayan bilimadamının kızıdır. Dolayısıyla Lemmy'nin görevi önündeki en büyük engel bu kızla yaşadığı ilişki oluverir.
