Klasik müzik eğitimi almış, keman çalarak mütevazi bir hayat süren Rosenberg'lerin hayatı, asker dolu bir uçağın yaşadıkları adaya düşmesi sonucu alt üst olur. Her iki tarafan askerlerin adayı bir savaş alanına çevirmesiyle, hayatlarını tehdit altında gören genç çift, başka bir yere kaçmaya karar verirler. Ancak yakalanarak isyancı askerlere yardım ve yataklık etmekle suçlanırlar. Çiftin eski bir dostu olan Albay Jacobi, adayı savunan ordunun başındadır ve onlara yardım edecektir. Tabii eğer sadece... Eva onunla yatmayı kabul ederse!

Frederik Egerman dul bir avukattır. Oğlu Henrik teoloji okumaktadır ve babasının yaşama karşı tavrı onun mistisizmi ile hiç uyuşmamaktadır. Frederik oğlu ile hemen hemen aynı yaşta olan Anne ile evlenmeye karar verir. Anne'in gençliği ve sırdaşı olan hizmetçisi Petra'nın çekiciliği Henrik için başka bir huzursuzluk kaynağı oluşturur. Her şey Frederik'in eski sevgilisi Desiree ile buluşması ile başlar. Bu buluşma Malcolm'un gelmesi ile bozguna uğrar. Fakar Desiree kararlıdır. Frederik'i elde etmeyi aklına koymuştur. Annesinin yardımı ile hem Frederik'i hem de Malcolm'u aileleriyle birlikte kır evlerine davet etmeyi başarır. Gece yemek masası çevresinde başlar ve çiftler aşkın ve rastlantıların sonunda bir araya gelirler. Henrik babasının yeni eşi Anne ile aşkı keşfeder. Malcolm'un eşi ise kocasını kıskandırmak için Frederik'e ilgi göstermektedir ve bu ilgi iki erkeği rus ruletine kadar götürür.

Yönetmenliğini Ingmar Bergman'ın yaptığı film. Bergman yine favori oyuncuları Liv Ullmann ve Erland Josephson ile çalışmıştır. Pek çoklarına göre bir başyapıt. Orijinali 4 bölümlük bir tv dizisi olup, sinema filmi haline getirilmek için bir miktar kısaltılmıştır.
