Downshiftaajat sukeltaa kahden ystäväpariskunnan elämään, ja sarjan teemat ovat ajankohtaisia elämän kohtuullistamisesta taloudelliseen toimeentuloon. Kolmekymppiset menestyjät Tommi ja Satu ajautuvat taloudelliseen umpikujaan. Mersu vaihtuu lähijunaan, ullakkohuoneisto vuokrakaksioon. Vakavaraisesta statuksesta pidetään kuitenkin kiinni downshiftaamisen varjolla. Pysyvätkö kulissit pystyssä, kun ystäväpariskuntakin heittäytyy kohtuullistamaan elämäänsä?
