Hamile karısı Saskia’nın ısrarları üzerine Rembrandt Amsterdam Silahşör Milislerinin resmini yapmayı isteksiz bir şekilde kabul eder. (Bu eser daha sonra Gece Bekçileri olarak tanınacaktır.) Kısa bir süre sonra, Batı Dünyası’nın o sıralar en zengin şehrinde maddi avantaj ve kişisel güç için hile yapan askerleri oynayan Amsterdamlı tüccarlarla ilgili bir komplo hazırlandığını öğrenir.
