Žofka, the only daughter of the innkeeper, falls in love with the princely black hunter Jiří, who previously dated the daughter of the forester Slávka. Hostinský does not want their relationship, but the young still meet. Žofka becomes pregnant and agrees with Jiří that she will secretly give birth in the city, leave the child with the nurse and that they will be married when Jiří becomes a district inspector. However, the wedding will not take place, because the prince will force Jiří to marry Slávka. Žofka therefore marries without love a blacksmith who has loved her for a long time and who also knows that Žofka has an illegitimate boy in the city. Jiří is raising a child. One day the boy falls ill and Jiří writes a letter to Žofka to come. The blacksmith does not want to let her go, but the mother's feeling drives Žofka to the child. However, he arrives late, the boy died. A desperate woman drowns.
