Edo döneminin sonlarıdır. Dünya ve Amanto adı verilen uzaylılar arasında bir savaş patlak vermiştir. Savaş sırasında pek çok samuray hayatlarını kaybetmiş ve savaşı Amanto'lar kazanmıştır. Hükümet artık Amanto'ların kontrolü altındadır ve Edo'yu istedikleri gibi yönetmektedirler. Ayrıca hükümet kılıç kullanımını da yasaklamıştır. Böylelikle artık samuraylara ihtiyaç yoktur. Sakata Gintoki, bu dönemde yaşayan eski bir samuraydır. Kagura adındaki Yato klanından bir kıza, Shinpachi adındaki gözlüklü bir çocukla ve Sadaharu adındaki kocaman köpekleri ile birlikte, Yorozuya adında bir dükkan işletmektedir. Yorozuyada her türlü işi ücret karşılışında yapıp kiralarını ödemeye çalışırlar. Bu grubun başına gelen bazen komik, bazen hüzünlü ve bazen de macera ve aksiyon dolu olayları ele alır. Bazen de Gintokinin eski savaş yoldaşlarından olan ve 'Kihetai' denen bir terör örgütünün lideri olan Takasugi ile mücadele ederler.

In the early 1200s, Dogen brought Chinese Zen philosophy to Japan, and established the Japanese Zen school of Buddhism. He taught that a person was capable of realizing Buddhahood within himself, by way of Zazen. Zazen is extended hours of sitting and meditating to achieve a state of “Mu” (nothingness, or empty existence).

After the forced suicide of Nobunaga Oda at the Incident at Honnō-ji, powerful figures Katsuie Shibata, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Nagahide Niwa and Tsuneoki Ikeda meet to decide on a successor. The conference would become Japan's first group made political decision. The meeting was known as the Kiyosu Kaigi.

This film is the memoirs of Takasugi Shinsaku about the life of his great teacher Yoshida Shoin. Yoshida Shōin (吉田 松陰, 1830-1859) was one of the most distinguished intellectuals in the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate. He devoted to developing many Ishin Shishi who made an outstanding contribution to the Meiji Restoration. At least two of his students, Takasugi Shinsaku and Itō Hirobumi later became famous, and virtually all of the survivors of the Sonjuku group became officers in the Meiji Restoration. Takasugi led rifle companies against the shogun's army when it failed to conquer Chōshū in 1864, rapidly leading to the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Ito Hirobumi became Japan's first prime minister. His admirer, Maebara Issei, was later killed rebelling against the Meiji regime. He is now enshrined in Setagayaku-（世田谷区）Tokyo, Japan.

The first half tells the story of marathon runner Kanakuri Shiso, who became one of the first Japanese nationals to participate in the Olympics in Stockholm in 1912. The second half features Tabata Masaji, the coach who laid the foundations of Japanese swimming and helped bring the games to Tokyo for the first time in 1964.

Okita’s older sister, Mitsuba, visits the quarters of the Shinsengumi to announce her marriage to the trader Kuraba Toma. The two siblings spend time together. Mitsuba worries that her brother has no friends and in order to assure her, he introduces Sakata Gintoki, who happened to pass by, as his best friend. Meanwhile, there are reports of strange boats going in and out of Edo. Hijikata Toshiro investigates this and it turns out that the incident has an unexpected link to Mitsuba.
