The folks who populate the rundown hotel in this story have all come there from someplace which offered a modicum of hope. Gloria, who runs the place, earns most of her money as a stripper. She lives there with her two daughters and a son with an untreated brain tumor. Charlie, who is forever in and out of jail, is Gloria's sometime lover. A recent check-in is there hoping she can work up the courage to commit suicide, since her rich doctor husband ran off and left her. Another resident is Tim, who keeps company with his dog and his booze in equal measure. A schoolteacher comes by from time to time, hoping to do these people some good, but in choosing this lot to work with, she proves to be just as much of a loser as the rest of them.

Anne Fortier is a criminal psychologist who works for the Montréal police force. Holding her own among her overwhelmingly male colleagues, the affable, brilliant but slightly klutzy young heroine probes the grisliest of crimes hatched by the most depraved of minds. But Anne also struggles with a dark secret in her own past, which she jealously guards.

This serial portrays the lives of young people in a student residence. Louise, who owns the house, has had to play every role imaginable, including mother, nurse, confidant, psychologist and probation officer. With their affection for Louise, it's no wonder they come back every year. Some manage to stand on their own two feet, but Louise is always there for them.

In the 1950s, young boys were placed in orphanages and endure harsh and austere living conditions. As a united group, they supported each other and survived despite bullying, hardship and little hope for better days. While these children were doing their best to survive, they had no way to suspect the secret dealings between the clergy, the medical profession and the government that will inevitably seal their fates. The institution faced with a precarious financial situation, the solution is to transform the orphanage into a psychiatric institute in order to obtain additional subsidies. To demonstrate the need for this change in status, the orphans are labeled as insane by the very people who took them in to help them. While their future as orphans was already precarious, they become prisoners of an asylum system from which they have little hope of being able to free themselves even as they grow older.
