Edith Piaf’ın 1959’da New York’da verdiği konser sahnesi ile başlayan film, Fransız şarkıcı Piaf’ın, 40’lı yaşlarına odaklanıyor. 1915 yılında dünyaya gelen Piaf, babasının çalıştığı sirk sayesinde küçüklüğünden itibaren pek çok yer dolaştı. O dönemlerde, en yakın arkadaşı Mômone ile sokaklarda şarkı söyleyerek para kazanıyordu. Bu sırada bir kabare işleten Leplée tarafından keşfedildi ve kısa sürede, onu meşhur edecek çevre içine girdi. Genç yaşta yakalandığı hastalık ve bağımlılıkların, henüz 40 yaşındayken onu 70 yaşında bir kadın haline dönüştürdüğü, yürüme, konuşma ve şarkı söyleme yetisini kaybettiği süreci tüm çıplaklığı ile gözler önüne seriyor. Filmde, Piaf’ın büyük aşk yaşadığı ve 1949 yılında bir uçak kazasında hayatını kaybeden boks şampiyonu Marcel Cedan’ın da önemli bir yeri var.

Schiffer’ın kafasında kimsenin bilmediği planları vardır. Hikayenin gelişmesiyle beraber Anna ve diğer iki adamın yolları kesişir. Çekimlerinin bir kısmının İstanbul ve Kapadokya’da yapıldığı filmin senaryosu Jean-Christophe Grange’ın ünlü kitabına dayanıyor.
