Huzuru yaşamını Hıristiyanlık dinine adayarak bulan Zamperini, 1998'de 81. yaşgününde Japonya'nın Nagano kentinde düzenlenen Kış Olimpiyatları'nda da Olimpiyat Meşalesi'ni taşımıştı.

İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Eric Lomax, Singapur’da Japonlar tarafından yakalanan ve POW kamplarına gönderilen İngiliz bir memurdur, bu kamplarda Tay-Burma Demir Yolunda çalışmak zorundadır. En yakın arkadaşı kendisine eşlik ederken, Lomax işkence sahnelerine geri döner ve kendisini tutan Japon görevli Takashi Nagase ’yı bulmayı başarır, acının ve nefretin yaşamından kendini uzaklaştırma niyetindedir..
