Julie Phan
Oyuncu · Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Julie Phan is a bitch from Toronto. She’s also a Viet-Hoklo multidisciplinary artist, arts manager and stripper. As a nearly two-time college dropout (McGill, NTS), she realized her level of internal Marxism could never match the level of study that was presented to her as her “curriculum.” In 2023, she was selected by Tarragon Theatre for the RBC Emerging Playwright Award, and by David Yee for the Siminovitch Protégé Prize. She is best known for disappointing her father as well as her work with fu-GEN asian theatre company (never walk alone; fine china; hi, we’re gonna go pick up some drugs).

FilmDramKomediAlone on Christmas Eve, Michael makes a last-ditch effort to win back his ex-girlfriend. Although repelled by his sudden reappearance, the promise of $1000 buys ten minutes of Honey’s time as she reluctantly sits through his declaration of love. Michael’s dreams of a heartfelt reunion are shattered when he is promptly rejected by a stripper who refuses to participate in his fantasy, challenging toxic romantic comedy tropes normalized through contemporary media. Based on her semi-autobiographical stage play, Never Walk Alone, Julie Phan offers a desensationalized interpretation of sex work through an intimate representation of the person underneath the projection.
