"Bisikletçi" 18 yaşında Vietnamlı bir gençtir. Ho Şi Min banliyölerinde kiralık bisiklet-taksisiyle çalışarak iki ablasını ve büyükbabasını yaşatmaya çalışmaktadır. Bir gün taksi çalınır ve filmde gerçek ismini asla öğrenemediğimiz Bisikletçi, hırsızları ararken bir çeteye bulaşır. Kim is 15; his father and step-mother have two buffalo, their lifeline as subsistence rice farmers. During the rainy season, there's no grass and the buffalo are starving. Kim volunteers to take the beasts inland to find food. On this coming-of-age journey, Kim sees men mistreat women, men fight with men, and French taxes rob the poor. He works for Lap, a buffalo herder whose past is entangled with Kim's parents, and he makes friends who will lead him to his place in the world.

Acclaimed for her outstanding beauty and intellect, Bạch Cúc is thought to have a lavish and glamourous life awaiting her in the future, but instead gets married off to the hedonistic, good-for-nothing heir of a wealthy landlord family. Refusing to tolerate the constant abuse wreak upon herself and other servants in estate, Bạch Cúc joins the Vietminh, and begins her double life operating an intricate intelligence network.
