Beş askerden oluşan küçük ekip, zırhlı tanklarıyla, Almanya'da savaşın ortasında kalır ve bu ekip bölgede kalan son Amerikan ordusu askerlerinden oluşur. Birlik az sayıda askerden oluşmasının yanı sıra cephane anlamında da bir hayli zor durumdadır. Gruba komuta eden Çavuş Wardaddy'nin Avrupa'nın tamamını yıkıma uğratan bu savaştaki son görevi, askerlerini Nazi birliklerinin kuşatması altında olan bu bölgeden sağ salim çıkarabilmektir.

Öğretmen Perry Makepeace ve sevgilisi Gail Perkins Fas’ta tatilde bulundukları sırada Dima adlı bir Rus’la tanışırlar. Demokratik Almanya Cumhuriyeti’nden kaçıp Batı’ya gitmek istiyorlardır ve planları ev yapımı bir sıcak hava balonu ile kaçmaktır. Haftalarca uğraşıp balonu diktikten sonra, amatörler ilk girişimlerinde bulunur. Batı Almaya sınırına metreler kala, yağmurdan dolayı ağırlaşan balonları yere düşer ama neyse ki polisten kaçmayı başarırlar. Ancak düşen balonun kalıntıları bulununca, polis bu kaçma girişiminde bulunan hainleri araştırmaya başlar. Aileler bir daha kaçma girişiminde bulunmaya karar verince olaylar daha gergin bir hal alır ama öte yandan kaçmaya çalışan hainleri bulamayan yetkililer, bir kaçış girişimi daha olacağını anlarlar. İki aile bu kaçışı gerçekleştirebilmek için arkalarında çok fazla iz bırakmadan gerekli malzemeleri alabilmeli, sorunsuz bir balon yapmalı ve poyrazın esmeye başlamasını beklemek zorundadır. Ancak bakalım herşey bu kadar kolay olacak mıdır?
